How We Find Deals
Where deals come from
- Community deal posts. We follow public, community-run deal boards (such as r/gundeals) where shooters post prices they've found. We link to the original post so you can see the discussion.
- Retailer product feeds. Through affiliate networks (currently Awin), retailers such as OpticsPlanet provide product feeds with prices and stock. We record those prices over time, which is what powers our search, price comparison and ammo price tracker.
- We don't accept payment to list a deal, and retailers can't buy a spot in the feed or the newsletter.
How a deal is checked
- Price vs. history. Where we have price history for an item, we compare today's price with what we've recorded before. A "sale" that matches the usual price isn't a deal.
- Cost per round. For ammo we work out price per round (price ÷ round count) so a 50-round box and a 1,000-round case can be compared fairly, and we compare it with typical prices for that caliber.
- Shipping, tax and fine print. Free or cheap shipping, coupon codes, minimum order sizes and limits change the real price. We note them when the source gives them. Feed prices usually don't include shipping or tax, so always check the total at checkout.
- Freshness and stock. Deals expire fast. Older deals drop out of the feed, and our price tracker only counts listings the retailer marks as in stock.
- Sanity checks. Automated rules throw out prices that look like parsing errors (for example a per-round price that's impossibly low), and posts that are discussion rather than deals.
- Ranking is rules-based: value (including price per round), freshness and the interests you choose. Tagging and scoring are automated, so mistakes happen. See corrections below.
Affiliate commissions
Some links earn us a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Commissions don't change rankings: a deal from a retailer that pays us nothing is ranked by the same rules as one that does, and community deals appear whether or not there's an affiliate link. Full details: affiliate disclosure.
